“Hello is this Michelle Wang?”
“Yes, that’s me” I answered
“How are you today? I am calling for the screening of the position you applied to at our company”
If I were to ask you what happened next, what would you guess? You have a lot of options, but I reckon you are mainly thinking of two: Either I got a followup or got rejected… Well, it is simpler than that. Here is a hint: this call only lasted less than a minute.
Dramatic flashback…
I was once again on my job hunting journey, and I came across one job that really caught my attention, it was titled “Entry Level Sales Job”, I click on the post, read it though, and handed in my resume as usual. I felt confident and wanted to avoid the mistakes I made on my previous interview, I wanted to make the most out of this one.
Five hours later I got an email for a screening appointment. Great! I immediately scheduled one for the next day, which was a Wednesday. I then took out my notebook and wrote down all the documents I should prepare beforehand if they ask for them.
Hump day is here, and I am waiting for the phone call, and then… *Ring* *Ring*
Let’s go back to the conversation
“How are you today? I am calling for the screening of the position you applied to at our company”
Then the interviewer starts with the questions:
“What is your major and when are you graduating?”
“Economics, and I’m graduating this month”
“Perfect… Do you have a driver’s license?”
The call only lasted 45 seconds, so guess what was the one thing I did not have on my list… You are right, a driver’s license, and that is how I lost my chance.
All I could think at that moment is how, although I don’t have a license for a car, I still have an unwavering license for my life, so I kept moving forward… and you should as well.
